You don’t always want your holiday decorations to be permanent or leave holes and residue, especially if they’re in a highly visible area like your mantel. Well, if you’re looking for holiday decoration ideas or hacks that don’t leave any remnants behind, you’ve come to the right place. There’s a simple project you can do with a common household objects — a pool noodles — that’s budget friendly while still looking great.

TikTok user craftybudgetqueen, shared the hack she uses to make her Christmas decorations on her mantle really pop using a pool noodle. The results are stunning.

Connie begins by cutting a pool noodle open and fitting it firmly over the edge of her mantle. Next, she makes several vertical cuts, equally spaced out. These create slots in the noodle that she can secure objects in. (I suggest making these cuts before securing the noodle on the mantel to avoid accidentally leaving scratches in the mantel.)

Once she’s made all the cuts she needs, Connie goes back and adds narrow, long-stemmed flutes to the noodle. She uses these to help drape a garland along the mantle, with small swoops. The garland appears to be made of fake evergreen branches; malleable enough to create artistic dips.

The garland isn’t enough on its own to cover the pool noodle, so the next step is to take fake poinsettias and stab their stems into the pool noodle. The large blooms help to further obscure it. After they’re in place, Connie takes fake holly berries and inserts them into the remaining gaps. She then weaves white berries throughout, adding one last layer of color and texture to the mantle piece decorations.

Finally, Connie fills the flutes with water and places tea lights on top. She lights the candles and then dims the lights to show off the garland in its full glory. (You could consider filling the flutes with red and white beads and put electric tea lights in them instead to avoid a fire hazard if your flutes accidentally tip over).

Alternative Ways to Decorate Your Fireplace

The pool noodle base seems to be the most practical option for this fireplace decoration. You could try florist foam but it’s unlikely to be as stable on your mantle. It would be a bit trickier to secure to the edge of the mantle.

Candles are a beautiful option; the tea lights are subtle but will still flicker enchantingly. Another alternative, if you’re opposed to open flames, would be garland with lights already attached. If you go that route, you may not need the flutes at all.
